Thirty-three years of uninterrupted support for the Peruvian Artist
Michell & Cia announces the launch of its XXXIII National Art Contest, once again promoting the categories of manual techniques in textiles and water colours, striving once again to open up a world of possibilities for Peruvian Artists through its continued, uninterrupted support.
Out of the untiring desire to retrieve and preserve the artistic legacy of our Andean ancestors. Michell & Cia., a leading company in the Alpaca industry, and whose aim is to support and promote Peruvian artists, rich in talent, but with scarce economic resources, will be holding its XXXIII National Art Contest this year.
This popular event, which has become a yearly tradition, was born thirty-three years ago, thanks to a regional initiative focused on techniques using water colours, later complemented by oils and now by the creation of hand-worked textiles.
The XXXIII Michell y Cía. Art Contest comprises two categories: Water colours and hand-worked textiles using techniques of choice. For the former, following a pre-selection based on portfolios submitted by the participants, a panel of judges made up of Mr. Ricardo Cordova, Alberto Muñoz Najar and Mrs. Lidia Benavides will select thirty finalists.
Those selected will present an unpublished work before Friday, September 6th, 2013, and from these the winning artists will be selected. The prize for first place will be US$3,000.00, and for second place, US$1,500.00. All those participants given an honourable mention will be awarded US$300.00 each.
Regarding the hand-worked textiles category, reception of the works at Michell & Cia’s installations in Lima, Arequipa and Cuzco, will take place from Monday 2nd to Friday 6th of September 2013. Winners in two sub-categories, creativity and technique, will be awarded US$3,000.00 each, with US$1,500.00 for second place and US$600.00 for one honourable mention.
The evaluation of this category will take place on Tuesday, September 17th at Michell & Cia’s installations in Lima and the judging will be undertaken by Mrs. María Elena Del Solar, Mari Solari and Marta Castañeda.
The cash prizes for the XXXIII Michell & Cía. National Art Contest, amount to more than US$15,000.00. The exhibition will first be held at the Mundo Alpaca Art Gallery located at the Michell & Cia. installations in Arequipa from Friday, September 27th to Friday, October 25th, 2013, and will later be exhibited at the two art galleries at the “El Olivar” Cultural Centre in the San Isidro Council building from Wednesday, November 13th to Monday, December 2nd, 2013.
